Simulated Acetaminophen Overdose: Pharmacokinetics and Effectiveness of Activated Charcoal Principle Investigator. Comparative, crossover study in 10 volunteers conducted during toxicology fellowship. Examined pharmacokinetics of five gram APAP dose (elixir), and ability of activated charcoal to reduce urinary recovery of APAP when administered at varying time intervals after the APAP. Presented in parts at two national meetings. Funded by University of Maryland. Manuscript published. Prospective Evaluation of Acute Pseudoephedrine Ingestion Principle Investigator. Evaluation of 200 consecutive cases of acute pseudoephedrine ingestion reported to a regional poison center. Conducted during fellowship at Maryland Poison Center. Presented at national meeting. Emergency Department Evaluation of Flumazenil in Patients with Suspected Benzodiazepine Overdose Participating Investigator. Multicenter, sponsored (Roche Pharmaceuticals) research protocol in emergency department at University Medical Center, Jacksonville. 1990 – 1991 Multicenter, Prospective Evaluation of Antidepressant Overdoses Study Coordinator. Prospective analysis of cyclic antidepressant overdoses presenting to 10 busy emergency departments over a one year period. Coordinated by Rocky Mountain Poison Center. Evaluation of Oral and Topical Minoxidil Exposures Reported to U.S. Poison Centers from 1985-1991 Principle Investigator. $12,000 grant from American Association of Poison Control Centers to review the epidemiology and clinical toxicity of all minoxidil expsosures reported to the AAPCC from 1985 through 1991. Funded by The Upjohn Co. Etomidate as a Canine Anesthetic in Cardiovascular Research Participating Investigator. Laboratory study of etomidate infusion in dogs instrumented during thoracotomy. Etomidate infusion (40 mcg/kg/min) produced adequate analgesia while preserving normal myocardial performance and cardiovascular reflexes. Co-Investigator. Multi-center study evaluating the use and adverse effects of Childrens Tylenol and Childrens Advil in the outpatient setting. This study will supply data to the FDA for determination if Childrens Advil can be safely sold without a prescription. Funded by Whitehall Laboratories. Emergency Health Care Provider Knowledge of Lidocaine Dosing and its Potential Toxicity Participating Investigator. Multi-center survey of faculty and housestaff physicians regarding their knowledge of lidocaine dosing and toxicity. Surveillance of the RADARS 7 by Poison Control Centers: A Pilot Study Participating Investigator. Study site coordinator for multi-poison center study coordinated by Rocky Mountain Poison Center, and funded by Purdue Pharma. Data is abstracted from poison case records, reviewed, blinded, encrypted and sent to RMPC. November 2002 - December 2008. Level of funding = $125,786 through march 2006. Ongoing project. Associated with Antivenom Therapy for Crotaline Snakebite Participating Investigator. Study site coordinator for review of snakebite patients treated with antivenin who were treated at VCU Medical Center and/or consulted on through the Poison Center. Data collection occurring in 2005 on patients treated in 2004. Evaluation of Repaglinide and Nateglinide Overdose as Reported to Poison Centers Participating Investigator. Study site coordinator for review of patients with overdose of study drugs and in whom the Poison Center was consulted. Efficacy of Crotaline Fab Antivenom for Copperhead Envenomations Participating Investigator. Prospective, multi-center controlled study evaluating the efficacy of a new Fab antivenom for treatment of copperhead envenomations. Poison Center Surveillance of Agricultural Poisonings Participating investigator and site coordinator. This multi-center study will provide pre-formatted questions to poison centers to use in cases of human exposures to pesticides. The goal of the study is to better understand the circumstances of pesticide exposures related to production agriculture.
