Race Description:
The Soggy Bottom Boys are excited to introduce a challenging, thrilling, and brand new course for the 2010
Orienteering Rogaine and Land Nav Challenge! This inaugural Orienteering course is completely new
utilizing some great terrain never raced on before. The 2010 event promises a little bit of everything,
navigation wise, to help tool up and work on your Nav skills for the new race season. There will be
traditional Orienteering w/ pre-plotted O-Maps, Mountain Bike AR-style Navigation and UTM plotting foot
Navigation, ALL in one race! (Not to mention awesome warm Winter post-race food)
General Course Info: There are 3 available events to register for:
1. 3-hr Score-O Rogaine (Find as many points as possible in 3 hrs adding up to highest 2. 6-hr Adventure Race Style Navigation (Plot UTM check points and find as many in 6 3. 12-hr Adventure Race Style Navigation (Plot UTM check points and find as many in 12 hrs on feet, on Mountain Bikes and back on feet)

Start/Finish will be held at then Spring Grove, VA area. Directions to Pipsico are included in the link here. Secure Parking at the Start/Finish provided.
Date and Times:
Saturday Feb 27th, 2010. 3-hr race starts anytime from 8AM till 12 noon. 6-hr race starts anytime from 8AM till 11AM. 12-hr race starts anytime from 8AM till 9AM. Further details revealed below.
Race Fees:
3-hr Score-O Rogaine cost is $25 per person (incl T-shirt, map and post race food). 6-hr Score-O Rogaine/Land Nav cost is $30 per person (incl T-shirt, maps and post race food). 12-hr Score-O Rogaine/Land Nav cost is $35 per person (incl T-shirt, maps and post race food). Registration by Feb 1st guarantees a T-Shirt. After Feb 1st no T-shirt guaranteed! Race day registration is available for an additional $10 per person. Registration opens Jan 1st, 2010 Detailed Course Info:
3-hr Score-O Rogaine: ALL racers receive blank O-map and have 10 min to copy Controls from a Master Map and study them prior to their start time. Then, evaluate point value of each control and choose their best route(s) to find as many points in 3 hrs. Walk or run on dirt roads, trails or bushwhack to find controls. Std USOF Orienteering Control Flags will be used. For every minute that you return after 3 hrs, 5 points will be deducted from your overall score. Highest score in the lowest time is the winner. Map Scale is 1:10,000.
6-hr AR Navigation Challenge: All participants must carry ALL Mandatory Gear with them at all times. In the first half of the 6-hr event, ALL participants will run the 3-hr Score-O course and finish it whenever they choose w/in 3 hrs. They will return to the Start/Finish & turn in their Score-O punch card. The 6-hr race clock continues to run. They will be handed a USGS map and a list of UTM Coordinates to plot on the map. (All participants will receive 15 min credit in total time to plot points and prepare Mtn Bikes) All remaining possible Orienteering points will be gathered on/off the bikes for the remaining 3 hrs. Std Orienteering Control Flags as well as marked PVC pipes will be used. Examples will be at the Start/Finish. For every minute that you return after 6 hrs, 10 points will be deducted from your overall score. Teams points of 3-hr Rogaine are added to their points of AR Nav. Highest Total team scores for both the Rogaine and the AR Bike/Trek Navigation Challenge in the lowest time will be the 6-hr Adventure Race Navigation Challenge winner. Map Scale for 2nd half is 1:24,000.
12-hr AR Navigation Challenge: Same rules for 12-hr race as 6-hr race except ALL Teams MUST return to
Pipsico by 5PM and complete the remaining course on foot. For every minute that you return after 12 hrs,
10 points will be deducted from your overall score. Teams points of 3-hr Rogaine are added to their points of
AR Nav. Highest Total team scores for both the Rogaine and the AR Bike/Trek Navigation Challenge in the
lowest time will be the 12-hr Adventure Race Navigation Challenge winner. Map Scale for 2nd half is
1:24,000.
3-hr Score-O map will be a 1:10K Orienteering style map. 6-hr and 12-hr Nav course map will be a 1:24K MyTopo map. Outside maps are allowed.
Team Compositions:
Soloist, 2, 3, or 4 person teams in the male, female, or coed categories. General Information:
Start/Finish bldg will also serve for plotting points, reloading gear, refilling fluids, storing gear, etc.
Parking lot located next to Start/Finish Bldg.
Check-in is located in the same bldg as Start/Finish A random “gear check” may occur out on the course. Missing gear will incur 100 point penalties Hot and Cold food will be available starting approx. 11:00 and run till approx 9:00PM Water “may” be available at specific locations on the course Carry $$ as a general store “may” be open out on the course area for snacks Most of the biking will be on hard paved roads, gravel roads or some dirt roads (NO single track) Safety Waivers will be signed upon Check-in CP areas may be wet due to weather. Plan accordingly for possible alternate pair of shoes and socks Mandatory Gear for 6/12-hr Nav races:
